GERIATRIC CARE MANAGERS

LITTLE USED RESOURCE CAN REDUCE LONG DISTANCE ELDERCARE WOES

Many Baby Boomers rely on their own devices while assisting elderly parents back home. In doing so, they often overlook a readily available resource that can enhance aging parents' well-being and reduce the caregiver's angst.

San Rafael, California (PRWeb) March 4, 2007 -- The collision of two demographic forces - population aging and mobility has resulted in over seven million Baby Boomers assisting aging parents remotely. This number is projected to surpass ten million by 2010. Boomers' job-related relocations or marriage have left them hundreds of miles away from parents who now need assistance. Parents' cascading needs have overwhelmed many Boomers. Most barely manage to keep up with today's issues and have no time for forward planning. They are left with uncertainty about their parents' well being, worry and even guilt for not being home when needed.

Eldercare advisor Esther Koch offers hope for long distance eldercare providers in an article featured this month by Parent Care. Koch is uniquely qualified to offer both professional and personal insights. As a gerontologist and a geriatric care manager she assists employers in managing employees' eldercare needs. As a caregiver to her elderly mother, she literally practices what she preaches.

Parent Care CEO, William Gillis, states "Esther Koch's article provides a perfect balance for our subscribers. She provides a professional rationale for utilizing the services of geriatric care managers then movingly shares her personal views and experiences."

From her unique vantage points, care manager and caregiver, Koch details the services benefits care managers provide to Boomers and their parents. She also relates the numerous instances in which she has applied them to her own role of caregiver.

Parent Care research indicates that few long distance eldercare providers are aware of geriatric care managers' availability. Fewer still are aware that these professionals can not only manage tasks that are frustrating caregivers but can also provide an important service that eludes most - planning ahead. "Koch provides concrete examples of our philosophy", states Gillis, "Caregivers should make a thorough assessment of parents' health, emotional and financial status to adequately assist them and anticipate future needs."

Koch is CEO of Encore Management which focuses on the needs of caregivers. She provides advisory services, seminars and presentations on a wide range of topics related to eldercare and aging. A delegate to the 2005 decennary White House Conference on Aging, she has been her mother's primary caregiver for over ten years.
